Meaning of the flag

The arms of Luxemburg date from the medieval times. Probably these are the Limburgian arms, diffentiated by changing the silver background into ten silver and blue stripes.

Flags in the colours of the arms (red, white and blue) were first used in 1830 during the Belgian revolt. The flag was defined as horizontal tricolour on 12 June 1845.

The flags of the Netherlands and of Luxembourg (as they are known internationally) are similar, but not the same, and it's just a coincidence, nothing to do with having any common origin. The colours of Luxembourg are derived from the coat of arms.

Because the flags still look similar at a distance, the Luxemburgers have a distinct flag for use on civil vessels on the Rhine and elsewhere.

Οι θυρεοί του Λουξεμβούργου χρονολογούνται από την εποχή του μεσαίωνα. Πιθανότατα είναι τα οικόσημα του Limburg που διαφοροποιούνται αλλάζοντας το ασημένιο φόντο σε 10 ασημένιες και μπλε ρίγες.

Σημαίες στα χρώματα των θυρεών (κόκκινο, άσπρο και μπλε) χρησιμοποιήθηκαν πρώτα το 1830 κατά την Βελγική επανάσταση. Η σημαία ορίστηκε οριζόντια τρίχρωμη στις 12 Ιουνίου του 1845.

Οι σημαίες της Ολλανδίας και του Λουξεμβούργου (όπως είναι διεθνώς γνωστές) είναι παρόμοιες, αλλά όχι οι ίδιες και είναι απλή σύμπτωση χωρίς να έχουν καμία κοινή ρίζα. Τα χρώματα του Λουξεμβούργου προέρχονται από το θυρεό.

Λόγω του ότι οι σημαίες μοιάζουν από απόσταση οι Λουξεμβούργιοι έχουν μία ξεχωριστή σημαία για χρήση σε πολιτικά σκάφη που ταξιδεύουν στο Ρήνο και αλλού.
